South Sudan
Renewed fighting in South Sudan has forced thousands of people to flee as former rebels and government soldiers continue to exchange fire.
Since Thursday, hundreds of people, mostly soldiers, have been reportedly killed in the fighting between rival armed factions.
According to the UN, more than 1,000 people fled from a UN mission protection of civilians site after its compounds in Juba sustained impacts from small arms and heavy weapons fire.
A UN Security Council emergency meeting has called on South Sudan’s neighbours to aid curb the violence in the young African nation.
The council also condemned all attacks and provocations against civilians and the United Nations.
A Chinese U.N. peacekeeper was killed and several Chinese and Rwandan peacekeepers were injured
The latest bout of violence is a fresh blow to a peace deal that has failed to end the civil war that broke out in December 2013.
